On October 28th, 2021, news broke that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, had changed the name of his parent company from Facebook to Meta, thus naming himself CEO and chairman of Meta. For those who may not know, Zuckerberg not only owns Facebook, but also Instagram, WhatsApp, and a host of other services, some of them not directly related to social media. When asked by reporters what the purpose behind the renaming was, he responded with it “being awkward” to have differently branded social media services under the umbrella of another social media brand, in this case Facebook.
Is Facebook, rather Meta, Expanding?
You could say they already had with the acquisition of the earlier mentioned social media channels. But in this case, Zuckerberg mentioned that Meta is also indicative of “the metaverse,” which he envisions as an immersive, 3D version of the Internet that would be possible in the near future. With this rebrand, Meta would in essence set itself up to be on the ground floor of the Internet of the future, one that could prove to be lucrative on levels reminiscent of Bill Gates and Windows.
But instead of assigning a different person to helm this new entity, Zuckerberg has curiously placed himself at the helm as CEO and chairman of Meta, citing his excitement for the project and his youth as his reasons for staying on in multiple reports.
Why Organic White Hat SEO Will Always Matter
Throughout all of its iterations, one thing has remained constant across the Internet: its users’ desire to find what they want. Just like the students of ancient worlds who poured over books for hours in dying candlelight, the researchers and writers of today are no different in our own searches to find exactly what we are looking for. Search engines and the algorithms that drive them have only adapted and improved over time to help us achieve that goal, and over time, websites who have practiced varying degrees of black and gray hat SEO methods have come and gone, mercilessly banished by Google for any variety of Internet SEO crime (link stuffing, keyword stuffing, affiliate links, paid links, etc.).
No matter what “version” of the Internet comes next, there is one thing that will never go out of style: convenience. And when that convenience can be at your fingertips, no one in their right mind is going to tweak their algorithm to filter out the results that don’t get you exactly what you’re looking for, regardless of whatever else may motivate them.
